The 2012 playoffs are here with some great first round match-ups. Here is a preview of each game.
No. 1 Bountiful Braves (10-6, 4-0) v. No. 4 Riverton Silverwolves (6-8, 1-3)
The Braves come into the playoffs boasting a perfect conference record and only losing 4 games in Utah. Riverton sneaked into the playoffs by beating American Fork in double overtime.
Bountiful Head Coach Marty Wescott: “We’re excited to be in the playoffs. We won’t overlook Riverton. We were the No. 1 seed a couple of years ago and they knocked us out in the first round so we will be ready to play.”
Riverton Head Coach Benny Lock: “I know that they have amazing face-off ability. Possession is one of their greatest tools. I’ve seen games they have played and they have a solid offense. They have great players and it seems great coaching. In order to beat this team I believe we will need to achieve 3 things. Ground balls, no penalties and backside help on defense. I truly believe that physical play and hard work for a full game will be the factor of our success. My boys are just happy to be here but they want more. They want to be relevant. They want to feel important and powerful. So this is a great stage to do that.”
No. 2 Davis Darts (7-6, 3-1) v. No. 3 Lone Peak Knights (7-5, 2-2)
Davis and Lone Peak met on March 29 with Davis stealing a 8-7 win. These teams are very evenly matched and have great players all around.
Davis Head Coach Trevor Yocom: “We have already played once, it was a close game throughout. They have a couple of really talented players in Stout and Fjeldsted that we need to watch closely. Last time we played Humphries didn’t play due to an injury and he is an extremely talented player. We need to do better on our face-off’s and ground balls to put ourselves in a position to win the game and stay out of the penalty box.”
Lone Peak Head Coach Marlan Coe: “Davis is a good team and presents a significant challenge for us. They are solid both defensively and offensively and they are well coached. We will have to work hard for the ground balls to increase our chances and then make every opportunity count – we cannot afford to be careless with our possessions when facing such an accomplished opponent on the other side of the field. Our players are excited to make the playoffs and have a chance to play one more time.”
No. 2 Pleasant Grove Vikings (10-3, 3-1) v. No. 3 Weber Warriors (5-7, 2-2)
The last time these two teams played was in 2006 when both teams were in D-II. Weber won 11-10.
Pleasant Grove Head Coach Brae Burbidge: “They have a big Attack that seems to do most of the heavy lifting. We need to watch him. We expect the Weber players to rise to the occasion, anyone wins on any given day. We are looking at this game as the next big game. We have to beat Weber in order to move on so they are the wall for us right now.”
No. 1 Timpanogos Timberwolves (10-3, 4-0) v. No. 4 Viewmont Vikings (9-5, 1-3)
Timpanogos won the No. 1 seed on April 27 when they beat Pleasant Grove 15-10. Viewmont claimed the No. 4 seed when they beat Bonneville on April 28.
Timpanogos Head Coach Bill Peperone: “Certainly, they are a solid team and should not be under-estimated. My players are excited to make playoffs in D-I and to be starting as a No. 1 seed. We know we’re facing some very talented and well-coached teams, so we will have to step up our game.”
Viewmont Head Coach Nick Baker: “Timpanogos has a strong attack line, and a couple of great middies. They move the ball well. Our defense has been playing great the last few games, so we’ll need to continue to be on top of our slides. To win this game we are going to have to be tough defensively and stay on top of the off ball movement. No doubt this will be a difficult game to win. Their scoring goes fairly deep into their roster. We’ll have to play our best to beat these guys. Our players are just excited to be in the playoffs. We have nothing to lose.”
