2012 Girls D-II Champions Timpanogos Timberwolves
The Timpanogos Timberwovles beat the Viewmont Vikings in the 2012 Girls D-II Championship at Brighton High School on Saturday. The Timberwolves trailed for the majority of the game but came back in the second half, winning 9-8.
Timpanogos scored first at the 23:12 mark. Viewmont answered right back to tie the game. Timpanogos took a short lead on a goal by Eliza Handley but Viewmont scored a minute later when Maddie Medeiros scored with an assist by Brittany Harris. Viewmont used the goal to spark a three goal run including two from Addie Acord. Both times Acord took the ball from the middle of the field and took it straight to goal. Timpanogos pulled one back when Briana Arnold scored on a free position goal. Both teams got good looks but were unable to score, closing the half at 5-3 in favor of the Vikings.
Viewmont scored at the 23:14 mark in the second half when Acord again found the back of the net. Both teams continued to run their offensive sets effectively which led to a Timpanogos goal by Madison Border on a free position goal. Both teams traded goals twice making the score 8-6 for Viewmont with 11:18 remaining in the game. The Timberwolves began to gain momentum and scored at the 9:11 mark when Arnold scooped up a loose ball in front of the goal and quickly shot for the goal. Five minutes of exciting, end to end action ensued without a goal due to stellar defensive play by both squads.
Timpanogos tied the game at the 2:08 mark when Handley cut to the goal and caught a pass from Jessica Huffaker. Handley shot the ball so quickly, Viewmont Goalie Sarah Johnson had little time to react. Timpanogos controlled the following draw and took it to their offensive end. Viewmont was called for a push, giving the Timberwolves a free position opportunity. On the whistle, Timpanogos shot it wide, keeping the game tied. The Timberwolves backed up the shot and when play resumed, Timpanogos was again given a free position attempt. Melissa Brown took the ball for the Timberwolves and when the whistle blew, Brown passed to Jennifer Johnson who was right next to the goal circle. Johnson caught and shot it in the bottom right corner, giving the Timberwolves the lead.
Arnold won the following draw and passed to Handley. Handley was pressured by the Viewmont defense who forced a turnover. Viking Amber Carr scooped up the ball but stepped out of bounds, giving the ball back to Timpanogos. The Timberwolves were able to pass the ball around the field, running out the clock, sealing the win.
“We’re proud of our players,” said Timpanogos Co-Head Coach Angie Maughan. “They were the ones that came back from being down. They didn’t give up and they pushed until the end.”
Timpanogos was led by Johnson who had 3 goals. Handley had 2 goals and 1 assist. Viewmont was led by Acord who had 4 goals. Timpanogos controlled 12 of 19 draws.
This is the first title for Timpanogos. Viewmont are the runner-ups for the second straight year after losing to Waterford in 2011.
