COLORADO SPRINGS – The Westminster College women’s lacrosse team had five players named a WCLA All-American for their performance during the 2012 season, the national office announced today. The five All-Americans matched Oakland for the most of any team.
Chelsea Farrell and Carson Chambers were named First Team All-Americans while Kaicee Beal, Sage Johnson and Alexa Ferdig were each named to the Second Team. Farrell and Beal were named at attack and Johnson was named at midfield. Chambers and Ferdig were honored at defense. Farrell and Johnson received All-American recognition for the second straight year which makes them the first two-time All-Americans in school history.
Farrell, a 5-2 junior from Cottonwood, Utah, set a school record with 103 goals and 41 assists during the season. Her 144 total points are also a new school record. Westminster all-time leading goal scorer had at least one goal in all but one game this season and had reach five goals or more on 12 occasions.
Chambers anchored a defense that allowed just 9.4 goals per game. The 5-6 senior from Park City, Utah collected 46 ground balls and finished with one goal and one assist. Ferdig played alongside Chambers on the back line and picked up 47 ground balls. A 5-5 sophomore from Riverton, Utah, Ferdig scored three goals and recorded one assist.
Beal and Johnson each had their season cut short due to injury. In 14 games, Johnson scored 35 goals and added 29 assists. The 5-7 senior from Sandy, Utah, was leading the team in assists at the time of her injury and scored on a team-best 62.5% of her shot attempts. Beal, a 5-3 junior from Salt Lake City played in nine games and finished with 43 goals and 49 points. Her 4.78 goals per game average was on pace to establish a new school record in that department.
Westminster finished the season at 18-6 overall and finished third at the WCLA National Championships. Those 18 wins established a new school record and the third-place finish is the best in the four years of the program.
