For Immediate Release – Westminster Lacrosse
COLORADO SPRINGS – The Westminster College women’s lacrosse team defeated Oakland (Mich.) 24-18 in the quarterfinals of the WCLA National Championships on Thursday. This marks the second straight year that Westminster has advanced to the semi-finals of the national tournament.
Westminster will now face No. 1-seeded Towson on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Westminster is the No. 4 seed and will take a 17-5 overall record into the game while Towson is 15-0. The two teams met earlier this season with Towson winning 19-8. They also met in last year’s semi-finals where The Griffins dropped a 20-9 decision.
Thursday’s game against Oakland was the highest scoring game in school history as the two teams combined for 42 goals. The previous record was the 32 goals scored in the Griffins 20-12 win over Utah on April 10 of this season. The 24 goals scored by the Griffins also set a new team record for goals in a game. The previous record of 21 was set on four occasions during the year.
Westminster twice faced a three-goal deficit in the opening half before going into halftime tied at 8-8. The Griffins opened the second half with four straight goals and never surrendered the lead the rest of the contest. With 11:13 to play the Griffins held a 16-15 advantage and then proceeded to score four of the next five goals to seal the win.
A win on Friday would advance Westminster into the championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m. Should Towson win, Westminster would play in the third-place game on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
