The Herriman Mustangs hosted the Silverwolves of Riverton Monday afternoon and came away with a solid win. Herriman took the lead early and held onto it for the duration of the game. Riverton came into the game looking for their first win of the season and had a few shining moments, but in the end could not come back from being down. Herriman defeated Riverton 18-6.
Herriman opened the game strong with a couple early goals. Both teams were playing well, but the Mustangs were able to convert on more opportunities. By the end of the quarter, Herriman was up 6-3.
Riverton stepped up both their offense and their defense and really fought to come back. They held the Mustangs to just two goals, however they could only score one of their own.
In the third quarter Herriman really started to mesh and began controlling even more of the pace of the game. The Herriman defense held the Silverwolves scoreless. They were also able to score four points of their own, including one in a two-man-up situation, scored by attackman Matthew Everton, assisted by attackman Matthew Dykes. Herriman immediately won the following faceoff and Dykes again had the assist to midfielder Benjamin Richard for the goal.
In the fourth, Riverton continued to play hard and did not give up until the final whistle blew. Silverwolf midfielder Matthew Poe scored a great goal low to low coming off a screen. Riverton was able to score one more, but in the meantime the Mustangs scored six more of their own. Herriman walked away with the solid win, outscoring Riverton 18 – 6.
“Our offense was working the ball,” commented Herriman Head Coach Mark Roothoff on what worked in this game. “Defense stiffened up and only gave them mostly transition goals. We play well as a unit. Man down D; we kept them out of the goal. Defense in general we kept them out. I thought that was key.”
In looking forward to the rest of this season, Roothoff said, “I hope we take it up to the next level, which I think we can.”
Riverton moves on to face Highland on Tuesday while Herriman will next compete against Davis on April 3.
