For Immediate Release – Utah Lacrosse
The University of Utah Men’s Lacrosse team went 3-0 to open the 2017 season after beating then ranked No. 1 Chapman, Washington and UNLV.
After an eventful offseason, the Utes took to the road to begin their season at the home of the defending MCLA D-I National Champion and current No. 1 ranked team, the Chapman Panthers. Chapman scored two quick goals in what looked to be the beginnings of a long night for the Utes, but the young Utah team didn’t give up and fought back with two goals of its own, tying the game at 2 after the first quarter. The second quarter saw both teams get two more goals in a great game. The third quarter featured 9 total goals with Utah scoring 5 and Chapman, 4. With the score at 10-9 favoring the Utes late in the game, Ian Elson and Gus Colonna notched goals to secure the 12-9 win.
“It was hard fought, it was everything that we worked for,” said Attackman Luke Graney. “We knew we were coming in for a really hard game and they showed us a tough, tough game. We practiced a lot of these situations so I felt we were really prepared. Our hard work payed off.”
On Saturday, the Utes headed to UCLA to face Washington in the Pac-12 Shootout. The game was never in doubt for the Utes who led 13-3 at halftime and won 18-10. Midfielder Jake Stout led the team with 4 goals and 1 assist.
On the way home, the Utes make a quick stop in Las Vegas where they faced a pesky UNLV team on Monday. The first half was a back-and-forth affair with neither team able to take a significant lead which led to a 8-8 halftime score. The Utah defense pitched a shutout in the third quarter while the offense tallied 3 goals. The fourth quarter started with Utah getting 4 more goals to gain the lead. UNLV chipped back late, but it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback. Utah won 15-11.
“It was exactly what we thought it would be,” said Head Coach Brian Holman. “We dug in at halftime and went on a big run and that’s big for us to come out of half playing hard.”
On Tuesday, midfielder Jake Stout was awarded the MCLA D-I Commanding Performance of the Week powered by Under Armour.
The Utes also entered this polls this week for the first time since 2012. The Utes are ranked No. 13 and will take on No. 14 Arizona State in its home opener on March 10. The game will be at the Ute Soccer Field and will begin at 7:00pm MT.
