LAS VEGAS, NV — The Westminster Griffins will take on a team comprised of Major League Lacrosse and other players at the Las Vegas Lacrosse Show on Sunday, October 29.
Westminster’s opponent will be headlined by players such as Kyle Harrison, Scotty Rodgers, and Tucker Durkin. The show will include the men’s game on Sunday, as well as a women’s game on the previous day, according to the Las Vegas Lacrosse Show’s website. College players such as former Johns Hopkins Blue Jay Kieran Eissler will be part of the team opposing Westminster.
Westminster head coach Mason Goodhand looks forward to the scrimmage. “It’s going to be fun for our guys to play against some MLL players for sure,” says Goodhand. “They’re really very, very talented athletes. They’re names that many of the young guys on my team, and even the old guys on my team grew up idolizing.”
While Goodhand is pleased with his team’s progress this fall, he recognizes the importance of elevating his team to a higher level of play. “I think we want to continue with the progress we’ve made getting our younger players confident in themselves,” says Goodhand. Goodhand wants his players to believe “that they can compete at a level that someone else says they’re not capable of.”
Goodhand believes the scrimmage is a good next step. “I think they’ll have some humbling moments and I think they’ll have some moments where they throw their chest out and say, ‘Hey, I can do this,'” Goodhand says. “I would say the number one thing is walking away feeling like they had a lot of fun playing, playing against some really good players, and testing themselves.
The Las Vegas Lacrosse Show was formed to help create a forum for lacrosse participants to the West coast. Goodhand says, “I think it’s very insightful. The organization that is leading this sort of invented what we see now for travel team lacrosse. I think they are innovators.” The show is a convention-style format that has vendors such as STX and The Lacrosse Network. The show also has demonstrations and camps for participants to learn from the pros.
Westminster will soon release their spring schedule. A few of Westminster’s road trips include stops in Kansas City, Florida, and California. Westminster’s upcoming spring season will have the Griffins seeking to return to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse championship game after losing to Colorado Mesa in last year’s game.
Westminster will also scrimmage University of Nevada-Las Vegas on Sunday morning before playing the professional team.
