The Utah Valley University men’s lacrosse team recently named their men’s lacrosse captains. Brian Quick (Sammamish, WA), Jayden Foster (Orem, UT), Keaton Stephens (West Jordan, UT), Justin Haws (Crozet, VA), Chad Renslow (Pleasant Grove, UT) and Scott Sutherland (Spanish Fork, UT) will lead the Wolverines into their 2018 season.
Coach Brian Barnhill said of the selections, “We’ve really tried to change the culture at the school for our lacrosse program. We set out some criteria early on as coaches for characteristics we wanted to have for our captains.”
Barnhill explained, “First and foremost we wanted to teach a culture of empathy for others.” To do this, UVU spent “hundreds of hours” volunteering for the Passages Program at the Melisa Nellesen Center for Autism at Utah Valley University. Part of the selection process for the captains involved seeing who would take on a leadership role at the sessions.
“With Jayden Foster, he would find a couple of students isolated and he would go over and sit with them one on one and develop a bond or social interaction.” Barnhill reiterated that he saw many of his players doing this. “Those are the kind of examples we’re looking for,” said Barnhill.
Haws, the team’s leading scorer from the 2017 campaign at 2.54 PPG, will seek to make an impact both on and off the field this season. “Now that [Haws] has more seniority on the team he is one of those players who is going to be helping others know where they need to be. On-the-field adjustments are really where we see him helping the team,” said Barnhill, who expects teams to focus their defenses on him.
On the defensive side of the ball, Foster looks to lead to add to his 40 ground balls he collected last season at LSM. “He loves to compete,” said Barnhill. “I know some other LSM’s maybe have a name, but he’s going to do really well this year and I think people are going to know who he is by the end of the season.”
UVU’s home opener is Feb. 16 against Colorado State University.
