Westminster Griffins LacrosseSALT LAKE CITY – Fresh off a runner-up finish at the 2013 MCLA Division II National Championships, the Westminster College men’s lacrosse team announced its signing class for the 2014 season on Wednesday. Head coach Mason Goodhand has added seven student-athletes for next season when the team moves to Division I of the MCLA.

Baird is a 6-foot-3, 195 pound defender and three year varsity player for Coach Mike Mathai’s San Marcos Knights. As a senior and team Captain in 2013, the Knights have outperformed expectations with an 11-4 regular season record in the very tough San Diego CIF in which they have amassed 31 wins across the last 3 years. Westminster Griffins LacrosseGREENVILLE, S.C. – The Westminster College men’s lacrosse team saw its quest for the second national title in school history fall a little short as they dropped a 9-7 decision to St. Thomas (Minn.) on Saturday afternoon in the MCLA Division II Championship Game at Sirrine Stadium.

Westminster (17-6) took an early 1-0 lead when Elias Fairman put one in the cage less than two minutes into the opening quarter. St. Thomas (17-0) answered the Griffins opener with five straight goals spanning the first and second quarter to lead 5-1 with 4:55 to play before halftime. Read More

The action will begin at 3 p.m. (MT) and will be streamed live on the MCLA web site with links available at WestminsterGriffins.com.

Westminster enters the title game at 17-5 on the season and winners of six straight games. They advanced to the final with a 9-8 triple overtime win over St. John’s (Minn.) in the semi-finals. The Griffins also claimed wins over Briarcliffe (N.Y.) and Indiana Tech at the tournament. Read More

Westminster Griffins LacrosseGREENVILLE, S.C. – It took a third overtime for the Westminster College men’s lacrosse team to defeat St. John’s (Minn.) 9-8 in the semi-finals of the MCLA National Championships on Thursday afternoon at Sirrine Stadium.

“I just told them to get to the (cage) and keep shooting,” assistant coach Brad Lavoie said. “It wasn’t pretty but we will take it any way we can get it.”

Brian Tyrrell sent the second-seeded Griffins (16-5) to the second championship game in school history as he scooped a loose ball into the net with 1:43 left in the third overtime session. The ball became free after an initial shot from Kyle Postler was turned away by St. John’s (13-3) goalie Michael King. BYU Lacrosse LogoGREENVILLE, South Carolina—The no. 4 seeded BYU men’s lacrosse team defeated the No. 12 Oregon Ducks to advance to the MCLA National Tournament semi-finals Tuesday.

The game got off to a fast-paced start with three goals being scored within the first five minutes.  The first goal of the game was an unassisted goal by BYU senior Pat Matheson, and senior Jake Ferrin followed that up by scoring BYU’s second goal of the game.  Oregon quickly answered to make the score 2-1 with 10:04 on the clock in the first quarter. Westminster Griffins LacrosseGREENVILLE, S.C. – The Westminster College men’s lacrosse team reached the semi-finals of the MCLA National Championships by defeating Indiana Tech 15-6 on Tuesday afternoon at the Wenwood Soccer Complex.

Westminster improves to 16-5 overall this season and the second-seeded Griffins reach the semi-finals for the fourth time in school history and the first since 2010. Indiana Tech, the tournament’s No. 10 seed, ends the season at 9-7. Read More

GREENVILLE, SC- The Brigham Young University Cougars came out strong in the first round of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association National Tournament, defeating the Grand Canyon Antelopes 17-8.

The Cougars started off quick, jumping out to a 4 goal lead early. Senior Pat Matheson got the Cougars on the scoreboard just 26 seconds into the game as he forced his way inside the ‘Lopes defense and beat the goalie off stick. Senior Mickell Walker followed up with a goal of his own just over a minute later to push the lead to two goals early. Read More

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Westminster College men’s lacrosse team remained perfect in first round games at the MCLA National Championships with a 16-4 win over 15th-seeded Briarcliffe (N.Y.) on Monday morning at the Wenwood Soccer Complex.

The second-seeded Griffins are now 15-5 on the season and they advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament where they will face the No. 10 seed Indiana Tech on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. MT.  Westminster has now won four straight games and they are 7-0 all-time in the team’s first game at the MCLA tournament. The BYU Cougars and Westminster Griffins will start their Championship journeys today in Greenville, North Carolina at the 2013 MCLA National Tournament.

BYU Lacrosse LogoBYU received the No. 4 seed and is match-up against No. 13 Grand Canyon University from Arizona. GCU is in their second year of the MCLA and finished with an 8-5 record. The Cougars and Lopes met earlier this season in a tight game that saw BYU escape with a 13-12 win. The Cougars will need to keep their eye on Carson Barton, a junior attackman for GCU who has 50 goals and 28 assists (6 PPG) heading into the game. The Lopes have a local product, Sophomore Defenseman and Captain, Tate Linford who graduated from Riverton. Linford will most likely be matched-up against BYU standout Mike Fabrizio who comes into the game with 44 goals and 27 assists (4.176 PPG). Read More

Tanner Matheny graduated from American Fork High School in 2012 as a Divsion I All-State 2nd team defender. From there, he was recruited to play at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. Hendrix is a NCAA Division III lacrosse college. As he wraps up his freshman year, he was some advice for those who are hoping to play at the next level. ” Make sure you work hard. Hit the wall, because when you step on the field you better be prepared for the next level or you will be passed by faster then you think,” He said.
