Copper Hills Jumps Out Early, Holds On To Beat Spanish Fork

The Copper Hills boys lacrosse team traveled down to Utah County to play Spanish Fork at the American Leadership Academy Wednesday night.

The Grizzlies, who came in at No. 10 in Week 1 of the Utah Lacrosse News Coaches Poll, scored first.  The scoring stalled as both teams tried to get a feel for each other. Spanish Fork then tied it up at one in the first quarter. That was the closest that the Warriors would get to Copper Hills.

The game started heating up when Copper Hills’ Radley Park dodged from X, wrapped around the right side, and fed Dylan Taylor who had cut to crease. Running their offense through X proved to be key for the Grizzlies.

“We just noticed that when we would drag one of our middies with a short stick back behind the cage, they wouldn’t switch with their poles,” said Copper Hills head coach Scott Park. “We just kept going to it.”

The Grizzlies relied heavily on Radley Park to facilitate the offense behind the goal. “He’s been playing varsity since he was a freshman. He’s so deadly because he’s a goal scorer and a feeder,” said Scott Park. “He’s really worked on his strength this year. I expect a lot of really important things for him.”

The Grizzlies went on a quick five goal run to finish the first quarter.

“We’re kind of a streaky team,” said Scott Park. “It works sometimes, but it can also be bad for us because we get a little out-of-whack. You get a couple of good, early goals on a team like Spanish Fork and that really helps you out towards the end of the game.”

After the Grizzlies put in two more in the second quarter, the game slowed down. Spanish Fork started to piece things together offensively, scoring two goals before Copper Hills answered back. It would go back-and-forth the rest of the game, with Spanish Fork pulling within three. However, there was not enough time on the clock for a Warriors’ comeback.

Eric Flowers grabbed nine saves in the win.

Next up for Copper Hills is Roy High School on March 1. Spanish Fork will play Corner Canyon on March 2.
