LOS ANGELES — The eighth-ranked Westminster men’s lacrosse team opened its weekend trip to California with a 19-3 win over UC Santa Cruz on Sunday evening.
Westminster (2-1) held a 7-2 advantage at halftime before erupting in the second half.Â Jake Arthur spurred a third quarter run that carried the Griffins to a 12-1 second half advantage.
The No. 23 Utah Utes came into Fridays game at 2-2 on the season, needing a big win over a top tier team to stay above .500, and start off a tough stretch of games against ranked opponents on the right foot.Â Utah had to work hard to gut out a victory over No. 10 Simon Fraser on Saturday night.Â The Utes and the Clansmen changed leads seven times throughout the game, setting up an emphatic overtime upset for Utah.
The Utes came out strong, jumpingÂ to a 3-1 lead at the end of the first, snagging momentum from a man-up goal with 7 seconds remaining in the quarter by sophomore attackmen Kyle Brennan. Utah looked to have a firm hold on the game before the Clansmen came storming back.

The No. 10 Simon Fraser Clansmen have a two game stint against the top teams in Utah this weekend, taking on the No. 23 Utah Utes this Friday in Salt Lake City, and the No. 4 BYU Cougars the next day in Provo. The Clansmen roll in to town off of a 15-5 win over Western Washington last week and are looking for huge wins over some tough competition on the road.
Simon Fraser will have their first challenge of the 2011 season against No. 23 Utah. The Utes are a team looking for a valuable win to stay above .500 and a confidence boost after a so-so performance in a recent California road trip where they won one game and dropped two games to higher ranked opponents.
