OREM, UT — Utah Valley University Men’s Lacrosse is excited to announce their 2018 Fall Prospect Day for 2019, 2020 […]
Former-BYU offensive coordinator Marty Wescott has officially joined the Utah Valley University men’s lacrosse staff as an associate head coach, effective immediately.
Wescott’s most recent collegiate coaching experience was as the offensive coordinator at BYU from 2013 to 2017. Wescott helped lead the Cougars to a 59-20 record during that span. In addition to serving as the offensive coordinator, Wescott was also the head coach at BYU from 1992-1994.
“From a standpoint of having experience and having done everything, he’s the guy,” said UVU Men’s Lacrosse head coach Brian Barnhill about the hire. “We’re really lucky to have him on board.”
Wescott joins a UVU team that went 3-11 last year in arguably the toughest conference in the MCLA, the RMLC.
Wescott said he plans to make an immediate impact for the Wolverines.
“My objective is to just keep the program moving in a positive direction,” said Wescott. “I hope to bring a culture of success to the program. I want players and recruits to buy into a culture of work and accountability to your teammates. We will try to maximize the abilities of the players and mold our strategies to their strengths.”
When asked about the opportunity to coach at UVU, Wescott was excited in his response.
“I think for a long time UVU has had great potential. I want to help the program and the players reach that potential. I see they have strong support from their administration and players who want to take the next step. The current group of coaches are committed to pushing the program forward. I feel like there is an opportunity to put my experience to the test and see how I can help,” said Wescott.
Barnhill was nothing but complimentary about Wescott joining the team.
“He’s coached everything from youth through college. He’s played youth through college,” Barnhill said. “He has a lacrosse mind like nobody else and loves the sport like nobody else as well. You know you’re going to get a lot of passion and that he’s going to teach the players the game well.”
Barnhill was also excited about the role model that Wescott would be for the players.
“He will set a good example as someone who serves others,” said Barnhill.
Wescott was also one of the major players in helping the sport grow in Utah.
“You look back on what Marty has done, he is one of the guys that has brought lacrosse to Utah. From that point on, he has been involved in lacrosse by starting youth leagues or club lacrosse teams, and coaching collegiately all at the same time,” said Barnhill.
Wescott’s duties have yet to be determined, but will most likely help on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
Wescott worked last season at IMLAX in addition to coaching club lacrosse teams in the state. He will continue in those capacities, in addition to his new coaching position.
“The UVU team has been very supportive in working and being flexible with me on this,” said Wescott.
Wescott will make an immediate impact on the program.
“I’m really excited about it,” Barnhill said. “We should have a good season this year.”
